About Us

Started with the name

Do you feel like you just stepped back in time when you read our name? Maybe you remember your parents or grandparents from years gone by telling you about articles or stories printed in the local Brigus newspaper,

“TheVindicator.”

Whether you are a lifelong resident of Brigus, a newcomer, or just here to visit, let me tell you a bit about us and our iconic name, The Vindicator Press Inc.

The Former Vindicator Building

On the corner of Magistrates Hill and Vindicator Lane, you will find Vindicator Park. This historic site is where a man named Jabez Thompson published a local newspaper called “The Vindicator and Brigus reporter” each Wednesday from 1898-1903 for 1¢ per copy.

The building where the vindicator was published was constructed of stone and brick and the outline of the original stone foundation remains there today.

Academy Hall

The former Methodist/ United Church Academy was located on this property for nearly 80 years.

During those years, the building had many uses. Downstairs was where the classrooms were located. Jabez Thompson, the founder of “The Vindicator” newspaper, was also once the superintendent of the school here.

The upper floor of the building is where many community events took place, from concerts and lectures to the Agricultural and Industrial exhibition, which took place here each October. Friday night movies were a popular event where many residents of Brigus could view films of Captain Bob Bartlett’s Artic exhibitions.

In 1956 the building was dismantled and relocated in sections to Salmon Cove, NL
